Laureus Award 2012 Winners: Novak Djokovic, Barcelona


Sports Man:

     Novak Djokovic the worlds number one ranked player in Tennis got the top individual honor at the 2012 Laureus sports Award on Monday February 6,2012. 
      The Serbian player Novak Djokovic after his Australian Open Grandslam title he is the fifth man in the open era to win three Grandslam continuously.
     The plus point of winning this award is, in the last year 2011 he totally played 76 matches. In this, he lose only 6. This is the lead of getting this award.

Team:

      Barcelona won the best team award  after a stellar 2011 in which Pep Guardiola's players won the Spanish League and Champions League. 

Sports Woman:

     Vivian cheruiyot, the kenyan distance runner who took the Sportswoman's Award because of winning worlds championsips last year for 5,000 and 10,000 meter titles.

Comeback:

     Darren Clarke won the Comeback Year Award. An 43 year old Northern Irishman won his first golf major by capturing the British Open at Royal St. George's Last year.

Break Through:

     Brilliant young star Rory McIlroy, 22, was named winner of the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award after winning the US Open, his first Major Championship.

Disability:


     South Africa’s Oscar Pistorius, dubbed the ‘Blade Runner’ because he uses carbon fibre blades, was presented with the Laureus Disability Award, after becoming the first amputee to win a track medal in the non-disabled World Championships, a silver in the 4 x 400 metres relay.

Action:


     American surfing giant Kelly Slater was named Laureus Action Sportsperson of the Year. It was his fourth Laureus Award, equalling the record of Roger Federer, the only other four-time winner.

Sports for good:


     Former Brazilian international footballer Rai, now a campaigner for social justice, won the Laureus Sport for Good Award.

Lifetime Achievement:


     Bobby Charlton was given the Lifetime Achievement Award 54 years to the day after surviving the Munich air disaster that killed eight members of his Manchester United team.
The 74-year-old Charlton was unable to receive the award. Laureus officials said he felt ill Sunday and returned to Manchester on Monday for some minor surgery. United Manager Alex Ferguson accepted the award behalf of him.
